Cleaning the city streets
We Care 4 Nelspruit is on a mission to keep the city clean.

The organisation is currently removing illegal street posters under a theme called “Not in my city”.
These are placed on road signs, electricity boxes, bins, street pavements and walls in the CBD.
Some of them offer cheap and quick abortions, some claim to enlarge body parts, some say they can remove bad luck and others claim they can make people rich.

The aim of this initiative is to restore, maintain and clean Mbombela.
Past TJ Maré, from the organisation, said the posters are some of the things which make the city look dirty.

“They are almost everywhere in Anderson Street, and almost all of them were placed illegally. For these posters to be legal, the owners need to approach the municipality, but they don’t do it. They simply paste them anywhere they like,” he explained.
We Care 4 Nelspruit is an organisation established by the Nelspruit City Improvement District, Nelspruit Community Forum and Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism.
It was started because they wanted to make a difference in town, as it does not look clean. In the past weeks since its launch in January, it has managed to clean various areas in town including Bester Street, the park outside Village
SPAR and Anderson Street. They will be going to clean a park in Wilger Street too.

“We are planning to approach various property owners in Bester and Anderson streets so that we can work together to clean up the city. We have a few property owners from Bester Street who have committed themselves to joining us.
Even if Anderson Street is one of my main focuses due to the state that it is in, we will also clean up all the other areas of the city,” he said.

Jannie Muller, from GIITD Architects, posted a video on social media challenging four businesses to join the initiative.
Muller said he decided to join the organisation after he saw what it was doing. “This initiative is making a difference, and if we all come together and join them we can make a difference. I want to urge local businesses to get involved because the more we are, the faster we can clean up town.
“If four companies can join and they then challenge another four, the number will increase. It is like a relay. After doing your part you move the baton onto the next person. The illegal posters in town are really making Mbombela unclean and they need to be removed.

They are all illegal and the things they advertise are not good. Some are placed on electricity boxes hiding the signs there. This is dangerous. They also place some on traffic signs.

“This is not an attack, although the council must look into this matter because they could also make a difference if they can do something about this situation. The shelter is also under pressure and getting assistance can help them a lot,” he explained.
When the project started, they had about 10 men who showed up to assist.
Those who volunteer get a free meal and they each carry a ticket that gets signed after working.
“The number of the people who volunteer has not changed, although the number of local businesses that are helping us has increased so much. We are truly grateful to see all the people who are helping us,” he explained.
Joseph Ngala, City of Mbombela Local Municipality spokesman, said the things advertised in the illegal posters are very questionable and the posters are placed illegally.
“They claim to do various strange things and those posters make the city dirty. They place the posters at night and the next day you just see them all over in the city. They never do it during the day. There are by-laws with regard to advertising, but they do not follow them,” he said.
