Local fencer achieves bronze at national champs
Jenna Ingram got a bronze medal in the u/13 épée category during the Junior National Fencing Championships in Soweto last weekend.

The championship is one of the largest competitions in fencing for youngsters aged between 11 and 20.
There were five local fencers who participated in the competition.
In 2017 Jenna obtained a silver medal.
She said when comparing the 2019 competition to 2017, she enjoyed the recent one more.

“When I went to the competition in 2017 I was only nine years old and I was very nervous. This time around I managed to control my nerves and I enjoyed myself.

I also learned a lot of things about competitions, now I know that I am not supposed to be nervous because nerves can take over and you fail to focus on what you are doing. We had so much fun,” she said.
Delané Ondendaal, Liam Wilson and Caitlin Barnard managed to make it through their pools to the top eight.
“They went out in direct elimination,” said Greta Ingram, the founder of Mpumalanga Fencing Club.
She said Cameron Barnard had a tough first competition, coming up against top eight fencers in South Africa in her u/17 girls épée bouts.
“She gained experience and confidence for the year ahead. There were over 120 athletes competing at Junior Nationals and it was an exciting yet exhausting day,” she explained.
Greta said they are looking forward to their next competition which is in Botswana on March 8 and 9.
