Dullstroom comes to life for fly-fishing

This was the first time ever that this championship took place in Mpumalanga. It is one of the fishing disciplines that was undertaken during the World Angling Games which were hosted by South Africa.

This quiet town came to a standstill when participants in the World Masters Fly-Fishing Championship paraded along the main street of Dullstroom last Sunday while residents and visitors to the town gave the teams from all over the world a jovial welcome.

Participating nations in the championship in Dullstroom included Ireland, USA, Australia, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and South Africa.

The competition sessions took place on Tuesday and Thursday and comprised three lake sessions and a river beat session taking place respectively at Dullstroom Town Dam, the Lochs, Nooitgedacht Dam and the Spekboom River.

All competitors and officials for the Masters Fly-Fishing Championship were accommodated at Dunkeld Equestrian Estate in Dullstroom.

A visit to the Kruger National Park took place on Friday and participants were treated to a full morning game drive and finger lunch. The championship drew to a close with a medal ceremony and gala dinner Friday at the Equestrian Centre, Dunkeld.

• The World Angling Games are regarded as the “Olympics of Fishing” and are hosted by a different nation every four years. The games started on Saturday with the official opening ceremony in Sandton, Johannesburg. Teams then dispersed across the country as selected by the federation of each fishing discipline.
