Nkomazi’s sporting champs lift 2019 Mayoral Cup

This year's Mayoral Cup winners in various categories and sporting codes joyously received their trophies after a thrilling day of finals on March 9.

After a Saturday packed with sports of all kinds, this year’s Mayoral Sports Development Cup champions in each code joyously lifted their trophies on March 9.

KaMhlushwa Stadium was packed with fans eager to witness the end of a journey that started in January.

Finals and exhibition matches in men’s and women’s soccer, basketball, netball, volleyball, boxing, tae kwon do, wheelchair basketball and netball and rugby for the deaf took place throughout the day.

The soccer finals at 16:00 were the highlight of the day, with Schoemansdal Junior Aces beating Steenbok West Germany 3-1 to be crowned the 2019 champions of the open category.

The defending u/21 champions, KaMhlushwa City Stars, had to give up their crown to Mawewe Charlton. The teams played to a zero goal draw and Mawewe managed to get six penalty kicks to City Stars’ five.

The u/13 girls of Zandile Primary School faced Mhlaba Primary School and scored one goal to win the match.

In the u/13 boys’ category, Mpumelelo Primary School beat Sekusile Primary School by two goals to one. In the u/15 boys, Khula Secondary School lost to Ndlela Secondary school with one goal to zero.

Slindokuhle Special School faced Bukhosibethu Inclusive School, who won the match 1-0.

In the women’s category, Schoemansdal Young Stars faced Naas Allstars and won 1-0 and the Nkomazi Ladies triumphed over the Schoemansdal Superstrikers.

KaMaqhekeza Masters & Legends beat last year’s champs SDN Steenbok Masters and Legends with 2-1.

Ligwalagwala FM won the friendly match against Nkomazi Legends.

Teams will officially receive their trophies and prizes at a special ceremony on Friday evening.

Several of the football teams that participated in the ceremony will take part in the Selati Cup, which kicks off on Thursday. A total of 128 local teams will fight for the coveted trophy over 10 weeks, culminating in the finals on June 2.

Rugby

• u/13: Luvoletfu Primary vs Matsamo Primary 20-10

• u/16 females: Mtimandze Secondary vs Lovunywa Secondary 20-0

• u/16 males: Horizon Academy vs Sidlamafa Secondary 24-17

• Seniors: Langeloop All Strong vs Black Cats 19-17.

In the category for wheelchair basketball, Nkomazi West (Simunye) beat Nkomazi West (Siyancoba) with 14-4.

In basketball’s u/19 category, Block A Wildcats won against Nkomazi Heat with 24-15 and seniors Nkomazi Lakers beat Nkomazi Heat 39-30.

The u/15 volleyball team of Mbangwane beat Shinyukane by 2-0 and the u/19 Mangweni Tigers won 2-1 against Mbangwane.
