Nedbank Cup: Chiefs beat City to advance into semi
On paper they have won potentially what could be their most difficult Nedbank match against high-flying side City, which are led by Benni McCarthy.
Kaizer Chiefs will take on Chippa United in the semi-final of the Nedbank Cup after beating Cape Town City 2-0 in the sold-out quarter-final encounter at Mbombela Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Having not lifted any silverware since 2015, Amakhosi faithfuls are hoping to finally win a trophy this season and the Nedbank should be their best opportunity in years.
Up until Sunday’s encounter, Chiefs have all along been handed what on paper looked as easier encounters.
In the last 32, the Phefeni Glamour Boys were drawn against Eastern Cape ABC Motsepe League campaigning side, FC Tornado. Glamour Boys narrowly won 1-0.
In the last 16, Chiefs were again drawn against amateur side, The Magic FC, which are campaigning the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League.
The George Dearnaley’s troops showed no respect towards the Glamour Boys and forced them into extra time as the game ended in a 0-0 deadlock after 90 minutes of play.
Chiefs later managed to score three goals which saw them progress to the quarter-finals of the competition.
The real test came on Sunday but they easily passed it with flying colours as they thumped Cape Town-based side, City, 2-0.
It was goals in each half by Pule Ekstein and Dumisani Zuma that separated the two sides.
To be fair, City, which came to the game with high expectations, failed to live up to theirs.
Chiefs dominated the encounter from the start with Khama Billiat as the main player. Chiefs were first for every ball. City players looked like they lacked big match temperament.
Next up for Chiefs are Chippa United and from there the winner will play Golden Arrows or National First Division side, TS Galaxy in the final.
