Karatekas sweat it out for medals at New World Shotokan championships

No injuries were recorded in the friendly championship which saw participants walking off with a number of medals.

Karatekas from all over the Lowveld converged on the Army Support Base Sports Hall in Mbombela for this year’s last championships. New World Shotokan, Nelspruit, were the host dojo. The participating dojos were; White River, Hazyview, Skukuza and WJKA Dojo from Graskop.

According to sensei Louw Venter from NWS, Nelspruit, the competition was a friendly one in which the participants competed in the kumite and kata categories.

“This was a friendly championship, meaning that there was no competition between the the different dojos and medals were issued according to personal performances.

“The event was well organised and with no injuries,” he said.

The medals were sponsored by Nelspruit Produkta Trucks and many of the competitors walked away from the event with a medal to show for their participation in the sport which demands intense concentration, focus and stamina.
