Team Mpumalanga sharpened their skills for this year’s National Indigenous Games at Noma Nini Lodge near White River last week.
The national tournament was held at the Seshego Stadium in Limpopo.
The team were selected earlier in the year at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo, where victorious municipal clubs competed to represent the province.

The team consists of 96 participants from nine different codes, with a manager and coach for each. Codes represent games from the different cultures in the country and include running games like dibeke and khokho, a coordination game called diketo, board games morabaraba and ncuva, the target game jukskei, a stickfighting game called intonga, drie stokkies that simulates the athletic triple jump and the exciting kgati in which rope-jumping is combined with the singing of traditional songs.

The Indigenous Games aim to promote cultural activities that have a particular appeal to vast sections of the South African community – young and old, black and white.
In most of these codes, both female and male teams are chosen.

The national tournament has been combined with the Schools Indigenous Games Tournament and sees for the first time, the participation of learners in jukskei, kgati, morabaraba and khokho.

As per usual, the province is expected to dominate in these codes. An elite as well as development team will participate in jukskei this year.
