Nelspruit Tennis Club players battle it out for top honours

The competitors braved the notorious Lowveld heat to pit their tennis skills against each other in hopes of bagging the coveted title.

The Nelspruit Tennis Club championship semi-finals kicked off this past Saturday at the club in Liebenberg Street. The players who participated braved the Lowveld heat and exerted themselves over the two days to secure a place for themselves in the finals, which will be taking place this coming Saturday and Sunday.

Competition was fierce and the tennis aces across the different age categories gave it their all against stiff competition. Peter le Roux was paired against Joel Masuku in the first round and saw off his opponent with a 6-2; 6-1 score. Jeanetha Boshoff and Sunel Coetser also went toe-to-toe, with the former clinching the match 6-0; 6-2. Teddy Ndlazi showed his tennis pedigree and defeated JC Kruger 4-6; 4-6.

Wiseman Nkambule and Abrie Visser were involved in a fierce exchange which saw the former emerging victorious with a 6-1; 6-3 win over his opponent. Dirk van Schalkwyk saw off Jack Beharrie with a 6-2; 6-4 score while Zander de Preez and Pieter Boshoff claimed the victory against Anton Grote and Peet Rabie.

The second round of matches started at 11:00, producing scintillating play from the mixed doubles partnerships. The men’s and ladies’ singles continued on Sunday, with a number of notable results as the players battled the heat to stay in the game.

Joseph van der Merwe saw off Dirk van Schalkwyk by beating him in two sets while Jeanetha Boshoff replicated this feat against Elzette Theron in the ladies’ singles. JC Kruger and Pieter Boshoff’s encounter was a thrilling affair which culminated in a 6-3; 2-6; 3-6 score, with the latter triumphant after an exhausting game.
