Phakisa Pumas’ Golf Day was certainly a whole new ball game

A number of well-known rugby players turned golfer for the day and acquitted themselves well on the greens.

The Phakisa Pumas hosted their annual golf day at the Mbombela Golf Club on Thursday, with participating teams competing for top honours in a fourball alliance format.

A number of Mbombela businesses gave their support to the local rugby team, who bade goodbye to a somewhat tumultuous season. The golf day was held to support local non-governmental organisation, Pediatric Care Africa.

The organisation endeavours to provide daily medical assistance to children in the Lowveld, according to Cassandra Jacobs. “We also provide monthly outreaches to communities in Mpumalanga – not only to Mbombela and White River, but also other areas such as Lydenburg, Hazyview and other areas.

“We are running a campaign called #HelpMyOp, which aims to help 1 000 kids with 1 000 operations. This includes cleft palates, tonsillectomies and any other medical condition we may be able to assist with,” she said.

A number of well-known rugby players turned golfer for the day and acquitted themselves well on the greens; a far cry from the trade they plied during the rugby season.

Luther Obi, Morné Joubert, Tazz Fuzani, Michael Benadé, Ngoni Chidoma, Simon Westraadt and Karel du Preez manned the gazebos and offered competitors a social drink coupled with some good-humoured banter before they proceeded to the next hole.

Although the event was held in support of a worthy cause, the competitive spirit remained and Righard Meyer, Dewald Meyer, Johan du Preez and MJ Mentz amassed 111 points to snatch the title.

Hot on their heels were Rudy van Wyk, Jabulane Mabulane, Victor Picoto and JP Bessinger with 110 points. Only two points separated the second and third teams, with Don Pearce and Keegan Phelan claiming third spot.
