Open Water Series gains momentum at Longmere

They gave their all in a demanding second leg in preparation for the next Open Swim meet to be held in Middelburg on January 19.

Longmere Dam was recently the scene of the second leg of the Open Water Series, facilitated by Mpumalanga Province Open Water Swimming.

The open swim offers a fun, relaxing atmosphere for families and hosts social swimming events in the 100-, 400- and 500-metre distances. The official events are swum over the 10-, five- and three-kilometre distances.|

Nineteen-year-old Thelise Saunders, who won the first leg of the four-leg series, stood her ground and once again took the spoils. She completed the gruelling 10-kilometre distance in 2:34:07;11.

The day once again proved to be a test of endurance for the swimmers, who gave their all in a demanding second leg in preparation for the next Open Swim meet to be held in Middelburg on January 19. Reece Zowitsk, from Midwit Swimming Club, who also reigned supreme at the first event held last month, took the spoils in the 10-kilometre boys’ division. He did so in a time of 2:24:42;69.
In the 7,5-kilometre girls’ division, Megan de Wet was the first and only one to finish the distance in 1:56:48;23. Among the boys, Andrew Matthew took the spoils in 1:45:33;01.

Jetro Piso swam a flawless three kilometres, claiming the top spot in the boys’ category.
Jordyn Minifie, who has recently been offered a scholarship to study and swim for Williams Baptist University in Arkansas, USA, was first to cross the finish line after finishing three kilometres in 41:11;15 – more than two minutes ahead of Kayla Schefermann. Edrick Potgieter took the spoils in the five-kilometre boys in a time of 1:25:19;45.

Due to technical difficulties on the side of the organisers, the results for the 1 500 metres, 800 metres and 100 metres were not available.
