MEET: Johan Kruger

A selfless teacher at Lowveld High School who does not care for the spotlight.

After 36 years he still has a passion for coaching children to become professional athletes.

He started working as a prosecuter in court for two years in Upington when he was young. He liked it and studied an LLB at Kovsies, afterwards realising that it is not what he wanted to do.

He then tried his hand at teaching and never looked back.

Kruger teaches Afrikaans to grades 10 to 12 and coaches athletics. “When children have a natural talent in athletics, it is my task to develop that talent,” said Kruger.

The pressure is building this year, due to the fact that he is coaching an athlete who could possibly compete in the World Junior Championships.

“An athlete’s talents need to be developed, because they can then have a career in athletics,” Kruger said.

He highlighted the fact that he is just an instrument to help a child achieve greatness.

“Athletes are the ones who need to be seen in the community, not the coach,” said Kruger.

He selflessly serves the community, school and children.
