Swinging action for goodwill

The festival grew from 36 teams in 2019 to 51 in 2020.

Penryn co-hosted the Ehlanzeni Hockey Festival with Hoërskool Nelspruit on both schools’ Astros on Saturday and Sunday.

The festival grew from 36 teams in 2019 to 51 in 2020. Not only did it serve as a preseason festival for schools to finalise their teams for 2020, but as an opportunity to help those less fortunate by donating hockey equipment to be distributed later by Sportreach at an outreach. As such, all participating schools undertook the mutual understanding that no scores were recorded or posted.

Much to the gratitude of head of hockey at Penryn, Misty Reingruber, the event saw 20 hockey sticks, eight pairs of hockey shoes and seven sets of shin pads being collected.

“This will make a difference in our Sportreach players’ hockey careers. We loved the feedback we received from the visiting schools and coaches as everyone involved enjoyed the format of the festival and used the opportunity to finalise their teams for the up and coming season. In addition to the festival, we ran an umpire education weekend where 44 umpires received training and grading.

We would like to thank everyone for making contributions to our Sportreach donation campaign,” Reingruber concluded.
