One man, one mountain bike – 300km in 24 hours, in a backyard in White River

Brett Stephen plans to cycle 300 kilometres, in 24 hours, in his own garden in White River. Money raised will be donated to Flamboyant School

He will start at 15:00 on Friday and finish at 15:00 on Saturday.

The 40-year-old Waterberry Country Estate resident has been keen sportsman all his life. He has loved and appreciated what sport contributed to him as a person, physically, mentally and emotionally.

So even though he has owns big property on Waterberry, lockdown has not suited him. He has the proverbial ants in his pants.

To solve the matter he is going to get his pants onto a mountain bike seat and peddle the equivalent distance from Halls Gateway to the Cullinan/Rayton off-ramp on the N4.

“About two weeks ago I marked out a 570-metre track on my property, to keep the kids and me busy and active,“  he said on Tuesday.

Stephen and Henry-John Williams (both of Brett Stephen Design) cottoned on to an idea by Trevor Todd, a Waterberry resident and former Flamboyant parent. Stephen has the track, he has the bike and he has the fitness level, so why not cycle and raise money for a good cause. All funds made from the event will be donated to Flamboyant School.  Stephen’s mother-in-law is Gail van der Riet, the principal of Flamboyant.

To successfully achieve his target he will have to cycle 526 laps of his homemade MTB single track.

“I was supposed to ride the Joburg2C this from Friday to next Saturday, May 2. It is a 900-kilometre, nine-day race from Johannesburg to Pennington on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast, so I’m fairly fit,” said Stephen.

He will take break three times during the 24 hours, to eat, shower and put on fresh kit. Stephen also hopes to get in a short nap during the second break, at approximately 02:30 on Saturday.

“We will also have prepared potatoes, boiled eggs, bananas, nuts and energy bars, as well as my water and race drinks for me to just stop and go as fast as possible,” he said.

Among the events he competed in last year were a 360-kilometre race and a 24-hour race, so he has all the experience for his charity challenge.

Van der Riet was full of praise for the initiative and said the the funds raised would be used to pay school fees for children whose parents are not earning an income due to  the Covid-19 knock-on effect.

“This, in a time when all our parents are facing stressful financial times and every cent raised will go towards helping our children. All fund-raising events have either been cancelled or put on hold until this pandemic is a thing of past. So ladies and gentlemen, help where and if you can. Thank you Brett and Henry-John for this initiative. Flamboyant family salute you both, and Brett Stephen Design,” she said.
