Who will land the R100 000 at Driekoppies Dam?

This weekend, the country's finest fishermen in the sport of competitive bass angling will descend on Driekoppies in the hopes of putting the puzzle together and claiming the R100 000 first prize during the 100k Bonanza hosted by Thermocline.

Over the years, Driekoppies Dam has become one of the best public waters in the country to target largemouth bass.

Fish of more than five kilograms have been recorded, with an abundance of two- to four-kilogram fish roaming the vast expanses of this prime Lowveld venue.

Driekoppies has enjoyed stable water levels for the past four years and the recent rise in levels and vegetation growth have resulted in baitfish populations flourishing. It truly sets itself apart from the other familiar dams in the Lowveld.

This weekend, the country’s finest fishermen in the sport of competitive bass angling will descend on Driekoppies in the hopes of putting the puzzle together and claiming the R100 000 first prize during the 100k Bonanza hosted by Thermocline.
The format is quite simple – team up in teams of two, catch your five largest fish on each competition day, and the winner is declared by the heaviest overall bag weight.

The event will see a capped field of 30 teams compete on Saturday and Sunday in this, first-of-its-kind, two-day bass angling shoot-out.
The teams come from various locations and competitors will have the opportunity to go up against Protea anglers and sporting legends such as Justy Varkevisser, Darryl Quinton, Micheal Matthee, Barry Grove and Charl Carey, to name a few. It will offer anglers the exposure to a very high standard of competition, which will definitely improve every team’s fishing skills in preparation for an ever-growing sport.

This event follows the 2019 SABAA Super Final at the same venue, during which the two-day winning bag was in excess of 19 kilograms. It will definitely require all the focus, patience and skill to claim victory during this prestigious event. Fishing has been reported to be very difficult, with ambient temperature reaching past the 40 degree mark during this past weekend’s practice sessions.
Along with the impressive first-place prize are some very tasty lower order prizes as well as serious cash prizes for the biggest fish to be weighed in. In total, in excess of R200 000 worth of prizes are up for grabs.

The event is not possible without the interest of the angling community, and sponsors that have come aboard have made it possible to offer this unique opportunity to the public. The event is hosted by Herman Geldenhuys and William Myers of team Thermocline – a regular team featuring on the Lowveld Bass Trail that runs annually from February to October.

The event aims to put Driekoppies and the surrounding area on the map of South African angling in order to draw more visitors. It also aims to raise funds in support of Thermocline’s participation in the BASSMASTER Team Championship during 2021 in the United States.
