Western Province outgun Pumas

After dominating the first half, the Pumas conceded three tries in the second

 DHL Western Province proved too strong for the Phakisa Pumas and won tonight’s Carling Currie Cup match 28-14 at DHL Newlands.
 
The Pumas were excellent in the first half and had the better of the home team.
 
They secured excellent turnover ball and were solid on defence.
The visitors played in WP’s faces and had the better of territory and possession.
 
Erich Cronjé scored to put the Pumas 5-0 up in the 14th minute.
 
It took the home team 30 minutes to score their first points when Kade Wolhuter kicked a penalty.
 
Three minutes before half-time, WP’s Scarra Ntubeni scored from an attacking maul.
 
The try was not converted and the team held an 8-5 half-time lead.
 
The home team extended their lead two minutes into the second half. Angelo Davids scored the try.
 
Ntubeni went over for his second six minutes later for an 18-5 lead.
 
Minutes after coming off the bench, Devon Williams nailed a penalty to narrow the gap.
 
Wolhuter restored the 13-point lead with a penalty on 55 minutes before a Williams’ penalty took the Pumas’ tally to 11.
 
They were awarded scrum penalties in the 70th and 72nd minutes, much to the bemusement of Springboks Steven Kitshoff and Bongi Mbonambi.
 
Williams narrowed to score to 21-14 with a 78th minute penalty.
 
Province showed their class with a Kitshoff try four minutes after the siren. Wolhuter converted for the 28-14 win.
 
They were the better team in the second half. They upped their intensity and the tries followed.
 
The Pumas put up a valiant fight, but were outgunned. They conceded 16 penalties during the match.
