Champion eagles 18th at Sabie Junior Open

The course was in excellent condition, despite the recent rain

Dean Hall of Graceland Country Club won the A division of the Sabie Country Club Junior Open with a score of 69 on Sunday. He scored an eagle on the final hole to win the Mpumalanga order of merit tournament.

The Highvelder’s one over par was enough to edge out Thami Ngobeni of Kambaku Golf Club and Derick Human of Bethal Golf Club, who both carded 70s to tie for second place.

Dean battled to find his rhythm on the front nine, with bogeys on three, four and nine, for 37 shots.

He was on fire coming in, starting with a birdie on the 10th, and a brilliant, tournament-winning eagle two on the 18th hole. He carded one bogey (15th) and six pars on the back nine. He came home in 32 shots.

Middelburg Country Club’s Behn Heys carded 71 to claim fourth place. Dean retained top place on the Mpumalanga u/19 order of merit.

The highest-placed Lowveld-based golfer on the order of merit after the Sabie Junior Open was Bernard Janse van Vuuren of Mbombela Golf Club in fourth place. He finished tied eighth at Sabie with 80 shots.

Players from clubs all over Mpumalanga competed on the picturesque Sabie golf course. Young Dieter van Niekerk, all the way from Pinnacle Point Golf Club in Mossel Bay, played and claimed second place in the C Division Net competition.

The beautiful course was in excellent condition considering the rainfall received in the preceding days. It is known to drain well and the fairways and greens were dry.

The B division was won by Schalk Grobbelaar of Mbombela Golf Club. He carded 81. Two players tied for second place. They were Aden Rouvoet who made the most of his knowledge of his home course, and Lian Jansen of Middelburg Country Club, both on 82 shots. Mbombela Golf Club’s Jon Jurie Grobler was fourth on 83.

The next tournament is the Walker Park Junior Open in Evander on February 28.
