Airlink Pumas ruthless in defeating DHL Western Province in Cape Town

The visitors ran in five tries.

The Airlink Pumas are back.

Since the 50-9 victory over the Sigma Lions on January 19, the Pumas have not been firing on all cylinders.

The set pieces, particularly the scrums, were not working for the Mpumalanga team.

This changed yesterday afternoon at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town when the Pumas defeated DHL Western Province 37-11.

The Pumas’ reinvented front row proved a point when the first three scrums of the game won the team three penalties.

The first scrum penalty led to a try by Sebastian de Klerk. Eddie Fouché’s conversion was charged down.

An excellent, long penalty kick from Fouché minutes later gave the visitors an 8-0 lead.

Western Province hit back with a try by Angelo Davids, set up by Tristen Leyds. Kade Wolhuter missed the conversion, but a penalty kick soon after saw the teams go into half-time 8-8.

While the Pumas dominated the first half, they blew Western Province into the Atlantic Ocean in the second.

Anele Lungisa scored a try in the right corner after a penalty that gave the Pumas an attacking lineout. Fouché added the two points from a difficult angle.

A Wolhuter penalty gave Western Province their only points of the second half.

De Klerk capitalised a brilliant break by Daniel Maartens to score and the try was converted by Fouché.

Willie Engelbrecht crossed the try line next before Tapira Mafura collected a cross-kick from Tinus de Beer to claim a try.

Western Province were not in the game for the last 30 minutes of the match.

The Airlink Pumas came into the match with their backs against the wall. A loss would mean that going into the second round of Currie Cup matches, it would be almost impossible to qualify for a semi-final place.

The Mpumalanga team showed what they are made of. The season is far from over for the Pumas
