Penryn clash with their rival Uplands at first derby
Penryn hosted this exciting fixture, and the two schools faced each other in hockey, netball, tennis, rugby, debate and chess.

It was a competitive weekend when Penryn clashed with their rival Uplands at the first derby of the year.
Penryn hosted this exciting fixture, and the two schools faced each other in hockey, netball, tennis, rugby, debate and chess.
It was the first of the two annual derbies and the players were all playing to win.

The weekend was a milestone for Penryn, as it had been five years and 10 derbies since their first netball team last won in 2014.
This year they won 23-19. Marné Potgieter, the coach, said words could not explain the emotions she felt on Friday after that end hooter went off.

“I am so proud of my girls. They truly played as a team and left everything on that court.
It was a very intense match in which the score was Penryn 11 and Uplandsfive at half-time.
The interval inspired our girls to turn the tie and win the match.
“The u/14 girl’s did extremely well and pushed to win their match 18-8 in what was a clinical performance.”
In the second team match, Uplands won with 11-1.

They also won in the other seven games in the different age groups. Uplands’ first rugby team won with 27-15.
They also won the other three games, but Penryn’s u/14 team won 27-12.
In the hockey games Penryn’s girls’ first team won with 1-0.
In the second team match Uplands won 2-0 and the other four games.Uplands’ boys’ hockey first team won 3-0.

They also won the other two games in the different age groups. In the the u/16A match it was a one-all draw.
In tennis, Uplands’ boys’ team won 44-38 and the girls won 51-31. In chess, Uplands won with 12-18 and they also won the debate.
“Another highlight of the derby was the first team girls’ hockey team winning.
The u/14 rugby team played very well and won,” said Potgieter.
Uplands sincerely thanked Penryn for their warm hosting of their school.

“These fixtures continue to build friendships and a healthy degree of competition between our two schools.

The amount of time and effort spent by the Uplands teams at practice and the spirit displayed on the day fuelled a great whole school performance. We look forward to our next derby.”
The next derby will be hosted by Uplands on May 17 and 18.
