Golfers swing with a purpose at this year’s KMIA Golf Day

Even though loads of fun was had, the day served a serious purpose.

The annual KMI Airport Golf Day was held at the Mbombela Golf Club last Friday. The event enjoyed the support of
local businesses, who dug deep to make a difference in the lives of needy learners.

This year’s theme was “Around the world in 18 holes” and each sponsored hole represented a different country. Needless to say, this provided the golfers the opportunity to tarry a bit longer at each hole, with fun and games tossed in to make the day memorable for the players.

Well-known local businesses put their golfing skills to the test, and acclaimed singer Kurt Darren also joined in to try his hand at the sport.

While there was loads of fun and games at each hole, KMI Airport marketing manager, Cat Nienaber, was on hand to
remind everyone what the purpose of the day was.

“Our annual golf day is a charity event, and this year all funds raised will go to chosen learners from schools surrounding the airport towards purchasing school uniforms, stationery and the paying of school fees for the next academic year,” she said.

This did not deter the players from putting their best swing forward, and competition was stiff. Andeon Visagie drove the longest drive and Ronnie Mbatsane received applause for landing nearest to the pin.

The Renovators & Aluminum team, comprised of Richard Meyer, Dewald Meyer, Johan Pretorius and MJ Mentz, gave it their all, building a considerable lead to separate them from the pack, and were declared winners on the day.

Lowvelder’s Russian-themed hole caused a proverbial stir, and was voted the best hole when the day’s proceedings drew to a close.
