IN PHOTOS: Primary school athletes compete with pride at Nellies meet

The meeting was excellent preparation for the upcoming interprimary

Athletes of Barberton Primary, Komatipoort Akademie, Laerskool Nelspruit, Nelspruit Primary and White River Primary competed in a thrilling day of track and field on Saturday, February 7.

Laerskool Nelspruit hosted the Produkta Nissan Friendly Meet ahead of this weekend’s Citybug Lowveld Interprimary. The athletes’ performances were as hot as the weather, much to the delight of the parents and friends on the packed grandstand.

The U12 boys 4x80m relay was a humdinger, with Laerskool Nelspruit and Nelspruit Primary producing the event of the meet. Primary took gold in 46.15 seconds, with the Nellies team second, one one-hundredths of a second slower.

Nellies’ Vanessa Badenhorst was the senior victrix ludorum. Her performances in the U11 shotput, 70m hurdles and long jump earned her 2 373 ASA points. Nelspruit Primary’s Clayton Mathebula won the senior victor ludorum trophy. He scored 1 927 ASA points in the U10 70m hurdles, and 80m and 100m sprints.

The junior victrix ludorum trophy went to Naledi Mabuza of Nelspruit Primary. She earned 1 206 ASA points in the 60m and 80m sprints. Tiaan Scholtz of Laerskool Nelspruit scored a total of 1 226 ASA points in the 60m and 80m events to win the junior victor ludorum.

• Best boy field athlete: Savian Janse van Rensburg (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U11 shotput; 752
• Best junior girl sprinter: Naledi Mabusa (Nelspruit Primary) – U9 60m; 643
• Best junior boy sprinter: Isaac Boyake (Barberton Primary) – U8 80m; 676
• Best senior girl sprinter: Charlika van der Walt (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U12 100m; 784
• Best senior boy sprinter: Jaydon Dlamini (Barberton Primary) – U10 80m; 661
• Best girl hurdler: Vanessa Badenhorst (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U11 70m hurdles; 803
• Best boy hurdler: Harrison Williams (Komati Akademie) – U11 70m hurdles; 720
• Best girl middle distance: Elin Pienaar (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U13 1 500m, 767
• Best boy middle distance: Stiaan Pretorius (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U11 1 200m, 580
• Best girl achievement ASA table: Zanika van Wyk (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U13 shotput; 857
• Best boy achievement ASA table: Savian Janse van Rensburg (Laerskool Nelspruit) – U11 shotput; 752.
