Hockey boys do school proud

The Uplands first-team hockey boys once again proved to be one of South Africa's most spectacular teams.

They were invited to take part in the Cape Town u/18 international schools hockey festival.

According to spectators, the Uplands boys were outstanding, and they cannot emphasise strongly enough how well they played – at a level comparable to any school in the country or UK – and how well they represented the school.

The team showed commitment and their conduct on and off the field was spot on.

Results – played seven, won five, drew one (goals for 18, goals against 10)
• SACS 0 – 3 Uplands
• Paul Roos 3 – 0 Uplands
• Hugenote 6 – 1 Uplands
• Merchant Taylors (UK) 1 – 0 Uplands
• Somerset College 0 – 0 Uplands
• Felsted (UK) 5 – 4 Uplands
• Stelenberg 3 – 2 Uplands

Over the past weekend, the college boys hockey team competed in the Mpumalanga finals held at the dusty Witbank hockey farm.

“The team didn’t hit their best form. Nevertheless, they proved victorious against Evander and, in the final, against Secunda,” said coach Alex Gitlin.

They now travel to Potchefstroom to compete in the Noordvaal trophy that started yesterday. Game one sees the squad take on Potchefstroom Gymnasium at 09:10.
