Hockey and rugby players refine their skills

The emphasis was on fun. Penryn College's school grounds swarmed with learners on Saturday during the hockey festival and SPIF sport sevens rugby day.

No scores are taken at the hockey festival days as it is aimed purely at the development of the players and participation. Penryn, Laerskool Nelspruit, Bergland, Summerhill, Sabie, Steelpoort and Uplands took part.

Lowveld High School’s seven’s boys were crowned cup winners in their group matches against Hoërskool Lydenburg and Generaal Hertzog of Emalahleni. LHS won the first match against Lydenburg 33-17. 

The second group match was against a much stronger opponent (General Hertzog) but they came out winners with 17-7. The team proceeded to the cup semi-finals where they played against Hoërskool Rob Ferreira. Rob were outclassed and went down 35-5. Lowveld went through to the cup final and clinched the cup in a nail-biting final. With only five seconds playing time left, Xumani Maakana scored the winning try for his team. 

• The top try scorers for Lowveld were Lindokuhle Seeti and Xumani Maakana.
