White River schools excel during provincial swimming gala
Uplands College and Prep, Rob Ferreira High School and White River Primary were under the top six schools in the province during a recent top schools gala event.
The swimmers of Uplands College excelled at the recent Mpumalanga top-schools gala as they placed first out of 16 schools.
Delano van Rooyen (boys u/16) was the best individual for boys in the 50m freestyle event and bagged 732 points. He also achieved great times in the 200m individual medley, 50m backstroke and 50m fly. Another Uplands swimmer, Landau van Rooyen (boys u/14) received the victor ludorum trophy. He won the 200m individual medley in 2:39:01 and also came first in the 50m freestyle in 27:66. In the 50m breaststroke, he placed first with a time of 38:06 and received gold for his winning time of 35:35 in the 50m backstroke. He topped this with another medal in the 50m fly in 30:69.
The school’s women and boys teams were overall first.
Hoërskool Rob Ferreira also did very well and came fourth in the combined teams, ninth in the women’s category and the boys had an overall fourth place.
The local primary schools also competed in a Mpumalanga top-schools gala at Curro Nelspruit on Saturday. Although the weather was miserable and the competition tough, the children swam their hearts out.
Uplands Prep took third place (644 points) and White River Primary sixth (204,5 points) out of a total of 23 school teams which competed. Uplands was also third in both best boys’ and best girls’ combined performances with 289,5 and 334,5 points respectively.
