Trio from Laerskool Malelane shine at athletics SA’s
Three athletes from Laerskool Malelane faced some of South Africa's most promising athletes at the SA Primary School Championships on Friday and Saturday.
MALALANE – Kuhle Mnisi (u/11), Hope Madonsela and Nqobile Mahlobo (u/13) were part of the Mpumalanga athletics team and represented the province in various track items at the Nelson Mandela University Stadium in Port Elizabeth.
Madonsela participated in the 80m-sprint and relay, winning a silver medal for each, she also received a bronze medal for her great performance in the 100m-sprint. Mnisi managed to get a seventh place in the 80m-hurdles final and Mahlobo came eighth in his heat of the 75m-hurdles.
These achievements followed their victories at the Mpumalanga Championships on January 27. Here, Madonsela was the winner in the 80m-sprint and came second in the 100m-sprint. Mnisi won the 80m- hurdles and Mahlopo came second in the 75m-hurdles.
The athletes said they had trained vigorously for the championships and were nervous about participating in such a big event, but that they were estatic about their achievements. They also remarked that the two days spent travelling to the event was tiresome, but they managed to catch up on some sleep. Mahlobo said it was very interesting to see how the different athletes warm up and loved that they saw the ocean too.
Laerskool Malelane’s staff and pupils are very proud of their athletic stars and congratulate Madonsela on bringing back three medals.
