Uplands host Fast 5 netball – a Lowveld first

Recently Uplands Prep School held a first of its kind in the Lowveld - a Fast 5 netball festival was hosted on campus.

Fast 5 netball can be compared to 7s rugby, where a maximum of five players are allowed on the court. The game is swift with three different scoring zones.

At the start of each game, teams are encouraged to do a one-minute dance.

Each game also has a power-play half which allows teams to score double points during this phase. The 11 squads were divided into two pools of five and six respectively. Matches were played in round-robin format. The top two teams then qualified for the semi-finals and then final.

St Peters and Malelane primary schools faced off in the final. Malelane had been dominant all day and won convincingly by 18-0. “We hope to grow this festival annually and encourage all local schools to get involved next year,” said girls sports coordinator and teacher at Uplands Prep, Maryke de Wet.
