Hosts are tops in derby at Uplands Festival
In their second derby Penryn and Uplands clashed in hockey, netball and rugby at the annual Uplands Festival which took place from May 27.
he second Uplands/Penryn derby took place with the Uplands Festival on Friday and Saturday.
Once again the pupils and teachers were treated to a feast of rugby, netball and hockey and more.
In the first derby, held at Penryn recently both schools were evenly matched. This weekend Uplands won 17 of the 31 matches played on the day, while Penryn won 12 and two ended in draws.
Penryn’s first rugby team won their match 36-17. The stands were filled with supporters and former pupils from both schools, which created a fantastic atmosphere.
Penryn rugby head, Graeme Stewart, said the Uplands team were playing for pride and wanted to give their headmaster a victory in his last derby.
“The Uplands team came out firing, but the Penryn team absorbed the pressure and dominated the play with their bigger forwards linking up with one another and providing a solid platform for their faster backline to score.”
Penryn went into half-time with a 22-10 lead. Early in the second half, Uplands scored a try from a chip kick and this got the home crowd hopeful.
The Penryn team quickly organised their defence again and shut down any subsequent attacks and did not allow Uplands to score again.

Penryn scored another two tries in the half through full back, Ernest Mthethwa, who came into the line to cut through the Uplands defence.
Ernest Mthethwa and Hadrick Coertze each scored twice for Penryn. Ya Ya Ngutshane also scored a try.
Mthethwa converted four tries and kicked a penalty. Stewart added that it was the most points scored by a Penryn team at Uplands.
