Lowveld High’s athlete do their school proud

Nolwazi Mashaba was presented the Sportswoman of the Year Trophy during Lowveld High School's (LHS) awards evening recently.

During LHS’s Interhouse Athletics meeting, she was chosen as the Best Junior Girls Track Athlete for her 662 ASA points in the u/15 girls 90-metre hurdles. She won a gold medal in the triple-jump at the Interhigh meeting earlier this year at Hoërskool Lydenburg.

She placed first in the Mpumalanga Championships held in Secunda and won yet another gold medal at the SA Schools meeting and a second place at the SA Junior Championships.

At the recent Mpumalanga Sport Awards (MSA) held in Middelburg, Mashaba was named Sub-junior Field Athlete of the Year.

The Sportsman of the Year Trophy was awarded to Frank Muwayi. He claimed top spot on the podium in the triple-jump at Interhigh. He won a gold medal at the Mpumalanga Championships and a third place at the SA Schools meeting with a distance of 14,44 metres.

Muwayi received the Youth Field Athlete of the Year Award at the MSA. LHS’s athletes took four of the eight awards for schools at these awards. Gugu Nkambule walked away as the Junior Field Athlete of the Year and Nhlakanipho Maluginsa the Sub-youth Field Athlete of the Year.

Coach Johan Kruger received a special award for his outstanding contribution to athletics in Mpumalanga, coaching a great number of athletes to gold, silver and bronze medals at the National Championships over a period of 30 years.

The Most Versatile Sportswoman Award went to Yonela Velelo, who participated in athletics, was part of the second netball team, played first team girls soccer and girls rugby, provincial cricket and was a member of LHS’s first cricket team which ranked third in the province. In 2015 she also received the award for best u/16 rugby player.

For his participation in athletics, hockey, rugby and cricket, the Most Versatile Sportsman of the Year Award went to Banele Sibanyoni.

He was part of the first hockey, rugby and cricket teams. The girls first cricket team was named Team of the Year. They were crowned Ehlanzeni champions for the second consecutive year, placed third in Mpumalanga and had three players in the Mpumalanga Titans team.
