Ehlanzeni athletes shine at ASA Junior and Youth Championships

A number of talented young athletes from the Ehlanzeni District made their schools, families and the region proud when they represented Mpumalanga at the recent ASA Junior and Youth Track & Field National Championships.

No fewer than 28 stellar athletes from the Ehlanzeni District represented Mpumalanga at the recent ASA Junior and Youth Track & Field National Championships in Pretoria.

The national championships were held at Pilditch Stadium in the west of Pretoria from March 21 to 23, with Athletics Gauteng North the hosts.

Athletics Mpumalanga fared well, returning home from Pretoria with a total of nine medals – one gold, five silver and three bronze.

Twenty-eight Ehlanzeni athletes featured in the Mpumalanga team, of whom 11 managed a top 10 finish. Of those 11, two earned medals.

These were Mthokozisi Ndlovu, who finished third in the boys U18 400m hurdles event with a time of 53.03s, and Katelyn Kotze, who was second in the girls U16 long jump event, jumping a distance of 5.5m.

David Botha was close to a medal of his own, finishing fourth in the boys U20 javelin event. Zoë Cilliers was the only Ehlanzeni athlete to place inside the top 10 for two different items, finishing fifth in both the girls U18 100m and girls U18 200m races.

Thapelo Moloi also finished fifth, but in the boys U18 long jump. Anele Mkhonto was seventh in the boys U18 800m, and Amé Quinn finished seventh in the girls U18 javelin.

Siya Fakude placed eighth in the boys U20 triple jump, Roland Stoltz was also eighth in the boys U20 long jump. Leney Maree was ninth in the girls U16 3 000m, and Elizma de Villiers was ninth in the girls U18 high jump.
