The participants in the Esports day were competing for prizes worth a total of R75 000.

What started as a dream in 2024 became a reality on February 21, when Curro Nelspruit’s primary school hosted its first-ever Esports LAN event.

This event aimed not only to provide a competitive platform for Curro Nelspruit’s Esports players, but also to demonstrate to the community that Esports is a rapidly growing sport – one in which Curro continues to lead on a national stage.

With guidance and support from Curro Esports’ Magdeleen de Kock and Sherylee McBride, the school successfully welcomed 60 gamers from grades three to six. Participants competed in Minecraft Education, Rocket League and EA FC, showcasing the diverse interests and talents of young gamers.

Despite this being their first LAN event, Curro Nelspruit Primary’s staff transformed the school hall into a gamer’s paradise, with metres of cabling, carefully arranged set-ups and meticulous attention to detail.

A local sponsorship with Pronto Computer Solutions contributed prizes worth R75 000, adding extra excitement and recognition for the competitors. The school’s fibre line was also upgraded specifically for the tournament. The players proudly wore their brand-new Esports shirts, representing their school with enthusiasm and pride.

“Events like these highlight Curro Nelspruit’s commitment to providing learners with opportunities to compete in safe, structured and supportive environments,” said the primary school’s principal, Linda van Rensburg.

“Throughout the day, players demonstrated impressive teamwork, communication and skills that extend far beyond the gaming arena.”

Van Rensburg also vowed that this wouldn’t be the last tournament of its kind.

“The success of the event, coupled with enthusiastic feedback from both the school community and the broader Mbombela area, has set the stage for future LAN events.

“If this first tournament is any indication, Curro Nelspruit can look forward to even greater participation and success in the future. I would like to extend a massive well done to the dedicated staff, supportive parents and talented players who made this milestone event possible.”
