Onderberg school swimmers shine at provincial top schools galas

Not only did one of the Onderberg schools place in the top three at the primary schools gala, but one of their swimmers was also named victor ludorum.

The Nkomazi schools that took part in the 2025 Top Schools Primary and High Schools galas shone bright, with Komatipoort Akademie (KA) in particular flying the region’s flag high.

The two galas were held a day apart, with the high schools gala at Van Riebeeck Park on Friday, October 24, and the primary schools gala at Penryn in Mbombela on Saturday, October 25.

Both galas’ excellent conditions helped ensure that the swimmers could showcase their talents to the fullest. Competition was fierce at the high schools gala, but KA’s Nina van Staden still managed to secure fifth place in the 50m freestyle, sixth place in the 50m backstroke and sixth in the 50m butterfly. She took part in the girls U14 races.

At the primary schools gala, KA’s swimmers excelled and showcased their brilliance by helping to ensure the school finished third overall among the participating schools with 1 215 points.

Only Curro Nelspruit (1 525) and Laerskool Nelspruit (2 123) managed to outperform KA. Laerskool Malelane finished sixth overall and Riverview Preparatory School seventh.

Ethan Vermaak was KA’s shining star at the Primary Schools Gala and he was named the junior victor ludorum.
