Former Miss World shares her pain

Lowvelders will have the opportunity to attend the movie premiere of Brave Miss World on November 14.

The full-length film details the journey of a former Miss Israel, Linor Abargil, who was brutally raped only weeks before she was crowned Miss World in 1998.

Tears Transforming Education About Rape and Sexual Abuse (TEARS) is partnering with the Greater Rape Intervention Programme (GRIP) in Nelspruit to host two screenings of the film at the Casterbridge Cinema in White River. The first will be at 16:00 (R100pp) and the second at 18:30. A cheese- and-wine function will take place at 18:00 and will include opportunities for silent auctions. The cost is R150pp and includes an Avon purse (worth R189). The Star of Mandela, a pendant from Facets in Crossing (worth R5 000) will also be put up for auction.

The proceeds of the screenings will be divided 60% to GRIP, 20% to TEARS and 20% to the filmmakers.

GRIP hopes the movie screening will be a wake-up call for the people of the area and create awareness that rape could happen to anyone regardless of race or economical wealth. It could have happened to a colleague or your boss and you would never have guessed.

GRIP applauds Abargil’s bravery in turning her back on the glamorous image and life she is entitled to as a Miss World winner and showing a side that few people dare show. Their aim is to get people who have been raped to step forward and get the help they need. Men and women are invited to attend and mothers are encouraged to take their daughters.

Abargil will visit the locations where the film was screened in March to give motivational talks. Everyone who attended the screenings will be able to meet her.
