Common mortals discover the simple truth
It’s the spirit that counts for the Memorable Order of Tin Hats (MOTH) and spirit was in abundance this past week at their annual Quiz Night, hosted at Gumtreez in White River.
The teams did justice to an endearing MOTH sentiment; “There never has been, nor ever can be, a perfect constitution; nor will new laws cease. The most we common mortals can do is to observe the rules and then, between the lines, discover the simple truth … that in true brotherhood, it is the spirit that counts.”
MOTHs hold dear three ideals; true comradeship, mutual help and sound memory. The latter refers to remembering the fallen but, on the night of the quiz; there were more than a few participants whose memories were seriously challenged. Fortunately, there was a great deal of comradeship and help going around. No cheating was witnessed.
Dave Walters led the charge, ably assisted by his partner Vicky Reid. The quiz questions caused much head-scratching, the answers elicited ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ and, in typical Walters fashion, silly jokes were the order of the day. The Sizzling Sosaties took first place, much to the consternation of the Provisionals and Terminators. Team No Idea is still wondering what happened.
The order has been helping fellow comrades in need since 1927 and, this year, the proceeds from the quiz evening will go to a home for the aged in Nelspruit. True to its mandate, this will help provide meals, board, nursing, clothing and other amenities for those in need.
