Penryn girls achieve greatly overseas

They participated in the World Championships of the Performing Arts earlier this year.

MBOMBELA – Every artist’s dream is to make it big in Los Angeles. For the 17-year-old Amy-Lee Card and 16-year-old Noluthando Mathebula, this dream became a reality sooner than they expected when they recently participated in the World Championships of Performing Arts in LA.

Both these girls, who are pupils at Penryn College, spent two weeks overseas not only participating in the competition, but also touring the city and going to workshops where they learned more about the performing arts.

Noluthando participated in five items in the vocal category, where she sang with a backing track, as well as in three dance items. Amy-Lee in turn participated in three items in the self-accompaniment vocal section of the competition, and in two items where she sang with a backing track.

She was chosen for the semi-finals and, even though she did not make it to the finals, she still won overall champion of the world aged 16 to 24 for her rendition of “Can’t Help Falling In Love”. She accompanied herself in this item with her ukulele.

Both teens were also offered record deals, as well as scholarships at the New York Film Academy to study musical theatre. They have big plans for the future. “I am more interested in the musical theatre while Amy is going for the record deal,” Noluthando said.

The more shy of the two, Amy-Lee nods in agreement, and admits that she does indeed want to follow a career in the music industry.

Noluthando chats away, stating that she was not sure in which sector of the performing arts she wanted to make her career, but after the workshops she found that musical theatre suited her like a glove as it combines all the various arts.
Both the girls have been performing since they were little.

Noluthando remembers she was nine years old when she took her mother’s phone and filmed herself while she made up a song.

Amy-Lee says she has seen videos of herself at the age of two singing nursery rhymes and she has never stopped. She has also been chosen as the opening act in a series of concerts for Matthew Mole.

While the girls were overseas they were also followed by a film crew from the kykNET programme Hollywood Hier Kom Ek, which will be airing on November 30.
These are definitely two superstars on their way to the top.
