Toastmasters chat away at monthly meet

The theme for the evening was, "What would I do with R10 million" and every chartered member had the opportunity to speak their mind on the subject while welcoming guests that joined them.

MBOMBELA – Chatterboxes gathered for the first time this year at the monthly meeting of the Toastmasters. Wine was poured, the word of the day was given and the “uhm” and “ah” counter (that counts these pauses when you speak) was announced.

The local Toastmasters club was officially chartered in 2017 and currently has 23 members.

“Here you will learn how to compile a speech, speak within time limits and use correct grammar while speaking. There are also opportunities to develop different leadership skills,”

Tina Baer, vice-president of marketing of the club said.

Toastmasters is considered an educational club. You work your way up the ranks by completing tasks in different levels and getting evaluated on everything you do.

“I personally just love competitive speaking,”

said the club’s founding member, Nicci van Gelder. She currently holds the rank of advanced communicator bronze.

She explained that this chapter is part of an international organisation and that if you speak well enough, you might be able to qualify for the international competition in America.
