Local knitting group celebrate fourth birthday

The founder of 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, Carolyn Steyn, was the guest of honour at the fourth birthday celebration of the local knitting group.

WHITE RIVER – During an afternoon tea at Magnolia Restaurant on September 18, she elaborated on how the movement was established and thanked the local “knitwits” for their contributions.
She shared her vision of a whole nation coming together through knitting these blankets and called the ambassadors people who are “galvanizing communities into action”.

Local ambassador, Penny Boden, said the group members have knitted or crocheted about 400 blankets per year over the four years. Recipients of these blankets are, among others, residents of the Carolina old age home, children’s homes, car guards and security guards at Macadamia Village. Some were also given to the Lions Club to further distribute, which in turn donated more wool to the knitting women.

Carol Stephen, who had been working as ambassador for three years, received her official recognition from Steyn, before the latter also announced a massive donation of 1,3 tons of wool by a Gauteng company. “This will enable more people with the will, but without the wool, to join in and produce blankets,” she said.
Local women and men who would like join the group can contact Boden on 082-875-6691.
The group gather at the Sabie Valley Coffee Shop at Casterbridge on Wednesdays, where they happily knit away over a cup of coffee.
