Reckless driving the cause of mayhem on Watervalsrivier Pass

One person died and 24 were serious injured in two separate accidents on the pass, on the Burgersfort Road (R37), last week. In the first accident, 20 passengers and the driver were seriously injured in a Toyota minibus taxi at about 17:00 on Thursday April 29.

Six ambulances were dispatched to take the injured to Lydenburg Hospital for treatment. A woman was also airlifted with a broken pelvis and internal injuries to Mbombela after being stabilised. The pass was closed for hours while the scene was cleared up. Capt Kaizer Moela, Lydenburg SAPS spokesperson, confirmed that a woman died in another accident on Saturday May 1 at about 21:00. This was also on the Watervalsrivier Pass. The driver of the Toyota Hilux and two other passengers were seriously injured. They were flung out of the vehicle as it rolled and hit a tree. The woman was certified as dead on the scene by emergency medical services. Beer cans were found in the vehicle and it was suspected that the occupants had been under the influence of alcohol.
