BURGERSFORT – Gogo Ennica Makofane is determined to reach a century. On Saturday she celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends. The celebrations were held at Ga Makofane.

The gogo was celebrating her big day with her 18-year-old great-grandchild, Arabang Mokoena.
Makofane is one of the oldest residents of her village and is loved by everyone.

“My favourites foods are mogodu, veggies and mabele pap. I also sometimes enjoy fizzy drinks,” said the energetic gogo.

She had four children, but only one is still alive. The gogo said she has seen it all in her life.

“I lived during the apartheid years and I also saw the dawn of freedom. I am just grateful that God has given me a gift of life. I have lost many loved ones, including my partner, but God has kept me fit and healthy.
“It’s always difficult to bury your loved ones. I am happy of the love given to me by my grandchildren.”
Makofane has 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

She can still cook, clean, fetch wood and make her bed.
“I wish to one day celebrate my 100-year milestone,” she told Steelburger/Lydenburg News.

Arabang described her granny as a loving person who never holds grudges.

“My grandmother is a praying woman and an understanding individual who always finds ways to deal with situations.”

During the birthday celebration, there were well-wishes, presents, drinks and music galore to celebrate 90 years of life.
