Motaganeng residents plagued by water shortages, SDM responds
“They are taking us from pillar to post. We continue paying for water but we don’t access it. The trucks must be impounded for loading water out of municipal points without permission,” suggested the residents.
BURGERSFORT – Residents of Motaganeng Estate have blamed truckers who access water at a borehole in Apiesdoring as the cause of their water shortages.
Several residents in the area told Steelburger/Lydenburg News they had not had access to clean water for the past
fortnight.
“The guys in trucks are pumping water from the borehole that has to supply us. We are now forced to buy the water from the same guys who are stealing it,” alleged one of the residents, who chose to remain anonymous.
According to the residents, they reported the alleged water theft to the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) and Lepelle Northern Water (a state-owned enterprise supplying bulk potable water in Limpopo).
“They are taking us from pillar to post. We continue paying for water but we don’t access it. The trucks must be impounded for loading water out of municipal points without permission,” suggested the residents.
Lepelle Northern Water’s media liaison officer, Yolande Nel, directed all the paper’s queries to SDM.
Moloko Moloto, SDM’s spokesperson, said, “The municipality had a contractual dispute with the service provider who augments our water supply through their boreholes, but the matter has been resolved. We apologise for the inconvenience on the side of our customers.”
