As a servant of the people, I gladly accept this challenge of leading this municipality. Our immediate task and mandate is to deliver basic services to the people and we can achieve that if we work as a collective."
APEL – The second mayor of Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality (FTLM) was sworn in at the Moses Mabotha Hall during the inaugural council sitting on Monday.
ANC Cllr Eddie Edwin Maila is the new mayor of FTLM. Maila was elected unopposed in a packed hall.
Cllr Reneilwe Pholoane was elected the speaker, while Vincent Shoba took on the duties of the chief whip. Lerato Mojalefa was chosen as the chairperson of the Municipal Public Accounts Committee.
The municipality held its first special council meeting which saw 77 councillors from nine political parties taking the oath.

Speaking after being inaugurated, Maila said the council will strive to ensure that services are brought to the people. He indicated that the primary aim of the new leadership is to sustain the good work done by his predecessors.
“As a servant of the people, I gladly accept this challenge of leading this municipality. Our immediate task and mandate is to deliver basic services to the people and we can achieve that if we work as a collective.
“During election campaigns, we have visited and interacted with the communities who raised many challenges they are confronted with on their day to day lives. These include lack of water, poor roads, provision of electricity, housing and other socio economic challenges.
“We also wish to increase the pace in which services are provided. We must prioritise socio-economic challenges that we are faced with daily in our communities, poverty unemployment, and inequality.
“We want to see young people being involved in businesses, and others benefiting and getting bursaries, internships and learnerships in order to equip them with skills to compete in the job market.”
