Decrease in Easter road deaths in Limpopo
Speeding and reckless driving has been cited as a common cause for most of the recent crashes reported during the Easter period. Alcohol and fatigue cannot be ruled out as the underlying causes, because some motorists lost control of their vehicles and overturned.
SEKHUKHUNE – In an effort by traffic officers to curb road carnage on Limpopo’s major routes, 11 motorists were
arrested for drunk driving last weekend.
Sixty-seven drivers were taken to the traffic alcohol screening evidence centre in Polokwane and 11 of these were found to be over the accepted limit. The highest reading was 0.78mg/l.
Meanwhile, the Limpopo transport and community safety MEC, Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya, has revealed the road fatalities for the Easter period.
The province accounted for 22 fatalities in 61 serious crashes. The number is lower than the 34 the previous year.
The Vhembe District recorded seven deaths, Capricorn has five fatalities, Waterberg five, Mopani four and Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) had only one fatality. In 2021, SDM had nine.

“I am worried about drivers who continue to drink and drive despite numerous calls made since the launch of
the Easter Road Safety Campaign.
“We commend the law enforcers for the sterling work of ensuring that the lives of innocent people are safe by screening and arresting those who deliberately transgress.
“We will continue with the operations and visibility in our roads,” said Lerule-Ramakhanya.
