MECKLENBURG – A Burgersfort cop is among the 871 suspects who were arrested by the Limpopo SAPS during joint SAPS operations last week. The activities started on Tuesday May 3 and ended on May 10.
According to the Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Lt Col Mamphaswa Seabi, members of the Limpopo Highway Patrol Team were patrolling around the R37 in the Mecklenburg policing area, when they came across a white Nissan NP200. The bakkie was parked in the middle of the road next to the Mathule cross, with the lights on and the engine running.
“The police stopped to investigate and found one man inside. When he was asked to park the vehicle next to the road, he started to insult them. Upon inspection it was discovered that the man was drunk and in possession of alcohol.
“The police told the driver to step outside, but he refused until minimum force was used. During the squabble, the suspect assaulted one of the members while resisting to get inside their bakkie.
“The SAPS arrested the suspect who is currently facing charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, assault on police and resisting arrest. The 41-year-old suspect was later identified as a member of the SAPS’ Burgersfort K9 Unit,” said Seabi.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old foreign national was arrested in Monsterlus Village in the Sekhukhune District Municipality for allegedly being in possession of illicit cigarettes.
“The police received information about a supermarket at the Moratiwa Complex and rushed to the premises. Upon arrival, the manager of the store introduced himself and granted them permission to do a search. The police discovered 89 cartons containing Yes and Remington Gold cigarettes that were concealed inside the store. The manager was arrested for being in possession of illicit cigarettes with an estimated street value of R9 700,” said Seabi.
According to Seabi, the 871 suspects have already started appearing in their local magistrate’s courts facing charges that include murder, robberies, rape, driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal possession of firearm and ammunition, possession of suspected stolen property, contravention of the Immigration Act, possession and dealing in drugs, resisting arrest, possession of suspected stolen properties and illicit cigarettes.
The Limpopo SAPS commissioner, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, has commended the tireless men and women in blue for their commitment to fight crime and ensuring that the province remains peaceful and crime-free.
“Everyone who commits crime, irrespective of their status in the society, will be arrested and handed appropriate punishment for their crimes,” concluded Hadebe.
