EFF and shoppers demand leaking sewer in CBD to be repaired soon

BURGERSFORT – Some EFF members demand that a problematic sewage system in the CBD be repaired with immediate effect.

On Tuesday May 10, shoppers found themselves stranded as the Red Berets, some community members of Ward 18 and street vendors blocked all entrances of Tarfam Plaza.

The party members demanded that a leaking sewage system be fixed. According to EFF’s Walter Molapo, they tried engaging with the complex owners as well as the Sekhukhune District Municipality (SDM) to have it repaired, but the problem still persists.

“It has been flowing into the streets these past five years. Schoolchildren pass the sewage daily. The street vendors cook and eat in front of the sewage. These are inhumane conditions,” said the EFF’s Tseko Malepe.

The SDM spokesperson, Moloko Moloto, said the shopping complex is not connected to the municipality’s sewer infrastructure network.

“This is a matter that our service provider, Lepelle Northern Water, is handling as a matter of urgency, and we are working with the management of the shopping complex to ensure they make an application so that their sewer system can be connected to the SDM system.”
