BURGERSFORT – Limpopo government officials want to bring crime to zero.
As part of the government’s mandate to keep the communities safe, the Limpopo MEC for transport and community safety, Mavhungu Lerule Ramakhanya, as well as the acting HOD of transport and community safety, Steve Matjena, the provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, and other senior officials in law enforcement led a multidisciplinary operation in Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality on Wednesday.
The operation commenced with an oversight visit to the Burgersfort Police Station where a briefing on the status quo in the policing precinct and a walkabout around the police station transpired.
Notions and recommendations were made regarding the conditions and design of the station facilities, with more focus on prudence when attending to GBV cases.
The MEC acknowledged the service delivery improvement efforts at the station and urged personnel to always serve the community members with respect.
The second part of the day’s planned activities was an unannounced school visit to Manoke High School, where searches for illicit substances were conducted and awareness against the use of drugs and bullying was created.
Lerule-Ramakhanya and her entourage proceeded to Extension 10 in Burgersfort, where a door-to-door campaign against GBV ensued. Several households were visited and hawkers and bystanders were warned against GBV and encouraged to stand together and break the silence against the scourge, and criminality in general.
Information material on GBV with safety tips were distributed throughout the location.
Lerule-Ramakhanya and Hadebe were hosted at the Tubatse Community Radio Station before proceeding to Steelpoort where a roadblock operation was set up as an end statement to the day’s programme.
The roadblock yielded the following succession successes: four illegal immigrants arrested, three suspects were arrested for cable theft, one suspect was arrested for illicit cigarettes, 26 traffic summons were issued
and 14 warrants of arrest were executed.
Other success included 16 drink-and drive screenings and 75 vehicles being tested for road worthiness. Some 601 people and 573 vehicles were searched.
Lerule-Ramakhanya thanked the law enforcement officers on-site for their participation in the operation and urged them to continue with diligent service even when she is not around
