Fire in a lapa threatened infrastructure in Lydenburg
Thaba Fire and Rescue Services assisted in putting out a veld fire next to the Tuscan Villas.

Thaba Fire and Rescue Services (TFRS) was called out to bring it under control on Sunday August 14.
TFRS said it also constantly helps farmers to create firebreaks when the fire burns too close to the R36 and R37.

A firebreak creates a barrier to slow down or stop the progress of wildfires spreading to farms, residential areas or any other key points. According to the National Veld and Forest Fire Act no 101 of 1998, landowners are required to prepare firebreaks on their side of the boundary where there is a reasonable risk.
Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa), reminded the public that permits are needed for firebreak burnings. This is per the requirements of the minimum rule (2017). Phone 086 066 3472 to apply for a permit.
Lefpa said all burning operations should have been completed by August 1. It also warns the public on its website, www.lefpa.org.za, that the hot and dry conditions in June and July can quickly escalate a fire emergency.
Follow the fire danger index (FDI) on the website to verify if it is safe for firebreak burning. The current FDI for Mpumalanga is yellow, meaning a probability of fire is evident.
