The City of Mbombela (CoM) has strengthened its service-delivery capacity with the handover of additional municipal vehicles at Mbombela Stadium on September 16.

Executive Mayor Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko said the new fleet forms part of the municipality’s efforts to build internal capacity and improve services across its areas of jurisdiction.

The consignment comprises 10 water tankers, each with an 18 000-litre capacity, seven compactor trucks and three 22-seater buses.

Makushe-Mazibuko said the vehicles will support key municipal functions, particularly waste management, water and sanitation, while replacing ageing assets.

“The CoM’s investment in its own fleet is a practical intervention to improve service delivery. By owning and maintaining these vehicles, we reduce dependence on contracted services and the associated operational costs,” she said.

According to Makushe-Mazibuko, the investment will improve operational capacity, reduce response times and ensure frontline teams are better equipped.

She added that savings from reduced reliance on contracted services could be redirected towards other infrastructure priorities, including roads and bridges.

The new buses will also support the Office of Council, with councillors using them for oversight visits and monitoring municipal projects.

Makushe-Mazibuko said the additional fleet demonstrates the municipality’s commitment to creating a cleaner, safer and more responsive City of Mbombela.
“The handover also fulfils the mayor’s previous commitment that the final consignment of vehicles would be delivered before she leaves office,” concluded Makushe-Mazibuko.
