A multiple-truck collision occurred on the N4 between Hectorspruit and Marloth Park today, September 25.

The incident occurred on the stretch heading towards Komatipoort when three articulated trucks collided, immediately sparking a fire on impact that engulfed all the vehicles. All three drivers managed to escape the burning wreckage without sustaining any injuries.

Road closure causes delays

The Komatipoort-bound (eastbound) carriageway remains closed, and stop-and-go traffic controls are currently in place. Motorists are advised to expect delays, reduce speed and follow the directions of traffic officials on site.

The crash highlights mounting concerns over severe traffic congestion along the route driven by a high volume of heavy freight heading to the Port of Maputo. Long delays at the border have resulted in extensive truck queues stretching along the highway.

MEC condemns queue-jumping

Addressing the incident, Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, security and liaison Jackie Macie acknowledged the growing pressure on drivers but strongly condemned reckless attempts to bypass the traffic jam.

“While we understand the frustration of being in queues for longer hours, no individual has the right to drive in front of oncoming traffic,” Macie said. “This is not only unlawful, but it also endangers the lives of other road users.”

Macie confirmed that traffic law enforcement officers remain deployed near the Lebombo Border Post to crack down on queue-jumping, illegal overtaking, and reckless driving behaviour.
