Scammers exploit job seekers with fake learnerships
A recruitment scam involving fraudulent learnership adverts is targeting applicants and tricking them into paying fees.
The Department of Correctional Services (DCS) in the Polokwane Management Area has warned the public about a recruitment scam targeting aspiring learners.
According to communications manager Sachiel Nemafhohoni, the department has seen an influx of individuals who have fallen victim to fraudulent learnership advertisements circulating on social media. The scam uses images of correctional service officials and a video clip to falsely promote learnership opportunities in the department.
The fake advertisement instructs applicants to submit their details via an email address, dcs.recruitment@outlook.com, as well as through fax and WhatsApp numbers provided in the post.
“The advertisement further promises a monthly stipend of R7 135 for a period of 36 months. Victims are then required to pay a fee to access these opportunities. The Department of Correctional Services does not charge any fees for job or learnership applications,” he emphasised.
He urged members of the public to verify information before applying for any opportunities. Legitimate vacancies and learnerships are only advertised through official and credible platforms, including the department’s website.
Residents are encouraged to seek clarity at their nearest correctional facilities, including Modimolle, Tzaneen, and Polokwane correctional centres, as well as community corrections offices across Capricorn, Sekhukhune, Waterberg, and Mopani districts.
Nemafhohoni cautioned the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious or fraudulent activity to law enforcement authorities.
