Makhuduthamaga rolls out Easter road safety campaign

Motorists urged to avoid speeding and drinking and driving as authorities intensify road safety operations.

The Makhuduthamaga Local Municipality officially launched its Easter Road Safety Campaign on Wednesday at Apel Cross in Ga-Masemola Village, with authorities reinforcing their commitment to safer roads during the busy holiday period.

More than 100 vehicles were stopped and inspected during the operation, signalling a strong law enforcement presence aimed at curbing road accidents.

Municipal spokesperson Thomas Mashabela said the campaign forms part of ongoing efforts to promote responsible driving behaviour and reduce crashes, particularly during high-traffic periods such as Easter.

Mayor Merah Mahlase called on all road users to prioritise safety at all times, not only during the holiday season.

“Motorists must remain alert, obey the rules of the road, and respect other road users. Avoid drinking and driving, ensure vehicles are roadworthy and be mindful of pedestrians. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” Mahlase said.

She further urged drivers to exercise patience and caution, adding that every life matters and that responsible behaviour can prevent unnecessary tragedies.

Mashabela added that the municipality will continue to engage with the public throughout the Easter period, encouraging road users to prioritise safety.

The launch included roadblocks, vehicle inspections, and public awareness activities.

Stakeholders included the Limpopo Traffic Police, Provincial Disaster Management Centre, Makhuduthamaga Disaster Management Unit, Fetakgomo Tubatse Disaster Management Unit, Sekhukhune District Municipality Fire Services, Emergency Medical Services, and SAPS.
