Vlakfontein Library inspires young readers during Library Week

The event promoted a culture of reading and encouraged young learners to engage with books through fun, interactive activities.

Vlakfontein Library recently joined the national drive to promote an Early Childhood Development Programme with a community-focused event on March 24.

The initiative was organised by the Elias Motsoaledi Local Municipality in partnership with the Limpopo Department of Sport, Arts and Culture under the theme, ‘Transforming South African Literacy Through Innovation, Competition, and Joy’.

Young learners were allowed to explore the library, engage in creative activities, and participate in interactive educational programmes to make reading both enjoyable and accessible.

The event was attended by the National Director of Sport, Arts and Culture, Thandi Mokwena, and the Sekhukhune District Director for Libraries, Thandi Mdluli.

Municipal spokesperson Simon Makua said the commemoration sought to promote literacy and instil a culture of reading among people of all ages. “It highlighted the important role that libraries play in providing access to knowledge, learning resources, and cultural programmes. It also encourages lifelong learning while showcasing the wide range of services offered by libraries,” said Makua.

He added that the programme further supported community development through storytelling, competitions, and interactive reading sessions.

Makua noted that the initiative succeeded in fostering a love for reading among children while promoting innovation, healthy competition, and meaningful engagement with books.
