Volkswagen starts teasing ID.7 Tourer as first EV estate

Replacement for the Arteon will go on-sale in 2024, but not in South Africa where a trial run involving the ID.4 is expected to start in the new year.

Having debuted the ID.7 as its first dedicated all-electric sedan at the Shanghai Auto Show in April, Volkswagen has started teasing the Tourer estate version that will become its first non-combustion engine station wagon ever made.

Replacing Arteon

The EV equivalent of the all-new Passat no longer sold as a sedan, the ID.7 Tourer also introduces the mentioned suffix as a replacement for the Shooting Brake moniker used on the Arteon.

Still a prototype as evident by the heavy layers of disguise said to have been derived from the sedan showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, the ID.7 Tourer will make use of the same MEB platform that underpins all of Wolfsburg’s ID models, albeit with revised dimensions.

Set to directly replace both the Arteon and Arteon Shooting Brake as part of Volkswagen’s core electric vehicle focus, the ID.7 Tourer’s fundamentals will include a boot volume of 545-litres, or as much as 1 714-litres with the 60/40 split rear seat folded down.

Boasting the same sports tourer, station wagon-type design as the Passat with the front lifted directly from the sedan, no further details or interior images of the ID.7 Tourer were revealed, with Volkswagen merely referring to the overall look as “elegant and powerful”.

As a comparison, the sedan, known during development as the ID Aero B, measures 4 961 mm long, 1 862 mm wide and 1 538 mm tall while riding on a wheelbase stretching 2 966 mm.

Spec and power

Despite the lack of information, the Tourer’s interior is guaranteed to be similar to the sedan, meaning the availability of the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, the 15-inch infotainment system with Volkswagen’s latest MIB software, optional Head-Up Display, voice controlled air-conditioning with the illuminated touch sliders and the panoramic sunroof that can switch between transparent and opaque.

Up front, the same battery pack options are also likely to feature, namely the 77-kWh module in the entry-level Pro and the bigger 86-kWh in the flagship Pro S.

Despite both setups producing 210kW/550Nm, the claimed range differs with the Pro able to travel 615 km while supporting DC charging up to 170 kW, and the Pro S up to 700 km with the ability to be charged from a 200 kW outlet.

Not for us

Confirmed to enter production next year alongside the sedan at the former Passat plant in Emden, Germany, the ID.7 Tourer is not expected to make South African-market landfall at any stage as a result of not only its bodystyle, but also focus on the SUV-flavoured ID.4 as part of a trial process due to start in 2024.
